Preaching Christ in Berkeley
There are numerous billboards signs like this one throughout Berkeley and the entire Bay Area. Supporters of Harold Camping and Family Radio are putting up these signs. In fact, other signs with the same message are being placed throughout the country.
Harold Camping, once an elder in a Reformed Church, has veered off into false/heretical teaching. He has published no less than two books, which predict the end of the world (1994 and 2011). Needless the say the first one was incorrect. Yet, there are those who continue to follow him. One wonders what many of his followers will do when his second prediction of “Judgment Day” fails to come to pass. For those of you who would like a better understanding of Harold Camping, I suggest you read a 5 part series on the “Valiant for Truth” blog written by one of my former seminary professor, Dr. W. Robert Godfrey. Dr Godfrey has a unique perspective as one who was taught the bible by Camping, when Dr Godfrey was a teenager.
Not only has there been a critical responses from biblical scholars and pastors such as Dr. Godfrey. There also has been a response from at least one atheist group. The Atheists have placed the following billboards around the Bay Area:
Thus we have dueling signs. One promises that Judgment Day is on May 21 the other says that the Rapture (I assume the return of Christ and Judgment Day are included) is just plain nonsense. Each of these billboards imply a reason you should ascribe to its message. The Judgment Day billboard has a stamp “The Bible Guarantees It” and the Atheist billboard “2000 Years of ‘Any Day Now’”.
Is it true that the Bible guarantees it? Well of course not. It is Camping’s who is making the claim, not the Bible. What the does the Bible say about the dating of Judgment Day? It says, “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only” (Matt 24:36). Throughout history false teachers have been predicting the day of Christ’s return and the day of judgment. However, God has chosen to not reveal to us the time of Christ’s return. He has done this for a good reason.
The Atheist billboard seems to argue that it has been 2000 years and Jesus has not returned yet, therefore the belief in His return is just nonsense. But of course the conclusion does not follow. If Jesus promised to return within 2000 years and He did not return within that 2000 year then I would agree with them. But you see, we are not given any such time limit. History from a Biblical perspective is much broader than the billboard. Yes the Lord could return at any moment but He will return at his timing not ours.
Both billboards make claims they cannot support. Also, both show a lack of Biblical understanding. If you are in the Berkeley area and would like to discuss these billboards or what the Bible does in fact teach, please stop by Covenant OPC Berkeley
